Peterborough and the Kawarthas

Peterborough Waterfront Walks

Select a route and explore Peterborough's beautiful downtown waterfront! Walking routes of various lengths lead you along the banks of the Otonabee River and Little Lake. Points of interest include the Ecology Park on the east side of the river. Little Lake Cemetery and the Hunter Street Bridge.

Village Walking Routes

Millbrook

Please Note: Some village walking routes include sections without sidewalks. Please use caution in these areas.

This route includes sections of the Millbrook Valley Trails and the attractive streets of Millbrook. If you want to explore more, check out the Millbrook Valley Trails. They are located immediately south of the Village of Millbrook, offering five marked routes between 0.7 and 2.7 km in length. The picturesque Needler Mill is located on the millpond beside the Millbrook Valley Trails trailhead sign.

Norwood

Called "the friendliest town in the County", Norwood offers inviting walking routes through shaded streets of Victorian homes and intriguing shops. The Ouse River winds through town; picnic areas are located at the Mill Pond and at the corner of King and Flora St.

Havelock

Leave the hectic pace of Highway 7 and discover the lovely Village of Havelock. To the north of the highway you'll find neighbourhoods of charming Victorian homes and historic churches. A wooded area along the north edge of town offers many unmarked walking trails. At the southeast end of town you'll find wonderful walking areas in Rotary Park.

Lakefield

Be sure to visit the Millennium Trail that winds through the beautiful Village of Lakefield. When in Lakefield, stroll the path that runs along the River, take in local history and try the sun dial in Cenotaph Park or attend one of the many festivals held in the village.

Apsley

Explore three walking routes of varying lengths in the Village of Apsley. Look for the oldest house in the village at #195 Burleigh Street, the 135-year old Anglican Church at #158 Burleigh Street and the former Red Cross Hospital at #97 Burleigh Street. Pick up a self-guided walking tour brochure at the Apsley Public Library or at www.thekawarthas.net

Keene

The picturesque Village of Keene is nestled in the rolling farmland of Otonabee-South Monaghan township. The village walking route features historic homes, the General Store, and the soaring United Church bell tower. Originally built in 1884 and standing at a height of 120 feet, the bell tower and steeple were recently restored to preserve a piece of Ontario's architectural history. Be sure to explore the gardens in Leo James Foley Park at the four way stop in Keene. Can you find the butterfly house?

Young's Point

Our area is known as “The Land of Shining Waters” and Young's Point is no exception. Watch as boats maneuver through Lock 27 to continue their voyage along the Trent-Severn Waterway. Look for giant carp schooling at the base of the dam. Walk through the cool, shaded woodland trail of the Young's Point Conservation Area to reach the South Beach Road where the air is scented with wild strawberry in early summer. Local restaurants and businesses offer delicious and interesting fare.

Buckhorn

Visit the village of Buckhorn and the sparkling waters of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Be sure to see the historic mill stones placed between the canal and the dam. Benches and picnic tables in the lock station and dam areas offer the perfect location for an outing: washrooms are available at the lock station. Visitors can watch as boats, large and small, make their way through Lock 31. The dam area is a popular spot for fishing, dining or taking a stroll.
